3rd flower bed - under the giant tree

After getting all the preliminary issues (such as monkey-grass and the doggy pee-box) out of the way, I was finally able to approach a more serious project - the 3rd flower bed, the one under the giant tree by Patritia's side.

That flower bed will be the largest one both by the width and the length. It also will protect the fence on Patricia's side from Chester jumping on it or trying to chew his way through it to get to the little chihuahua on the other side. So, thicker short shrubs and a small tree / tall shrub can go there. For the shrubs, I was thinking something evergreen and aromatic, like dwarf wax myrtle, sprinkled with some light gray or yellowish color, like Variated Privets. For the tree / shrub, I was thinking Jasmine or Japanese Red Maple. Although I have to be careful, because everything under that Patricia's tree will be growing in partial to full shade.

So, I after a very tiring afternoon of digging, my new flower bed is ready to use. I mixed old leaves and some mulch with the already-existing soil in the flower bed, plus I added 2 bags of Soil Rescue mix.

A small wooden fence probably won't stop the dogs from jumping over it, but I just always liked this type of fences, so here we go.

После того, как всякие организационные вопросы (типа эрозии земли и собачьего туалетного рая) были разрешены, я, наконец, взялась за собственно работу над озелениение моего дворика. Самая крайняя справа цветочная клумба стала моей пробой пера. За последние 4 года, она функционировала как свалка для всяких огородных отходов типа осенних листьев, собачьих какашек, ила из прудика, и метрвых рыбок \ птичек. Ну да это ладно -  все было в разных стадиях перегнивания. Хуже было то, что этим летом, когда нам меняли забор, добрые рабочие ее основательно засыпали щебенем.

Но, закатав рукава, я принялась за расчистку территории. Я удалила сантиметров 10 верхнего слоя почвы (смешанного с щебнем и слишком пропитанного собачьей мочей), и основательно перекопала нижние слои. Оказалось, соседское дерево начинается прямо в моей крайней клумбе! Никуда нельзя было копнуть, чтобы не вытащить клубок жестких корней. Из-за щебня и корней, работка оказалась не для слабых духом! Заняла практически весь день (одна-то клумба!).

После нанесения слоя нового чернозема и слоя опилок, я, наконец, была удовлетворена результатом. Чтобы собаки перестали на ней ходить в туалет, я поставить небольшой заборчик. Собак он надолго не остановит, поэтому мне нужно туда купить кустов взрослых как можно скорее, чтобы они составили "живую" преграду.

2nd flower bed - the doggy's future poop central

I am planning to make the yard as a kind of oblong-shape, with the center of the yard being devoted completely to the dogs and their needs, and the edges being reserved for my plants. 

The currently-rectangular central flower bed (FB #2) will, therefore, in time be disassembled, expanded, and transformed into a an oblong-shaped raised bed filled with mulch (for good drainage) and crowned with a central pee-post for the doggies to raise their legs on. That is being planned for the next summer. This fall, however, I just removed most of the dirt from it, left the shape untouched, and filled it with mulch, so the dogs could start getting used to the new place.

Here how it looked through the summer. I laid wire on it several years ago, so the dogs would not dig in it.

Here is its new condition. Dirt has been mostly removed, and the bed half-filled with mulch and pine chips. I did not fill it to the top, so that the dogs would not spread the mulch around the yard too much.

 

Если мои задумки в отношении моего дворика воплотятся в жизнь, то мой дворик приобретет овальную форму, с кустами и цветами по периметру, и овальной "собачьей песочницей"  посередине дворика. Средняя цветочная клумба, которая 4 года пустовла (я заложила ее решеткой и кирпичами, потому что собаки в ней рыли глубокие ямы), будет в следующем году разобрана, расширена, округлена, и засыпана грубой стружкой. Посредине будет стоять "цель для поднятых лапок" - какой-нибудь высокий предмет. Там мои Тэзз и Честер могут поднимать лапки, сколько хотят.

Но все это намечено на следующий год. В этом же году я пока из клумбы выгребла плодородную землю (пригодится!) и засыпала ее стружкой кедрового дерева и кусками коры ели. Очень вкусно запахло!

My biggest yard-joy...

I can't believe how pacifying it is to watch the fish swim. I spend about 30-40 minutes each morning by sitting by the pond with a cup of tea or coffee, and watching the little golden darts in the water. Regardless of how how hard it was for me to wake up in the morning, once I come downstairs to let the dogs out, I sit down by the pond, I feel like the bright and pleasant new day is awaiting for me... So, thank you, my little golden babies, for brightening up my mornings without fail!

 

Каждое утро я выхожу кормить моих золотых рыбок. Просто удивительно, как рыбки помогают прийти в отличное настроение. Они очень мило резвятся в воде, и если за ними долго наблюдать, то можно само-загипнотизироваться (и потерять счет времени и опаздать в универ!)...

Monkey-grass - the first step

The first step toward my new yard is to stop the ongoing soil erosion caused by the rain water falling like a waterfall from the roof . The water falls hard on the patio and the soil by our chimney, then runs downward toward the carport, and pools by the back gate, lifting hefty amount of soil in the process and creating a deep mud puddle by the gate each time it raines.

We have inquired with our HOA about installing some gutters, so we could divert the rainwater from the roof into a rainbarrel. They said they will look into this. In the meantime, given that more rainy weather is on the horizon, I decided to take action and install some temporary barriers to the water flow.

Here is the ground condition that I had to start with (all the buckets around are from my "Aroma Fence" project a week earlier.

From my Environmental Science classes I have learned that roots of the plants keep the soil from eroding plus absorb water . So, I decided to plant some sturdy and fast-growing plans by the pond, where the waterfall from the roof tends to cause the most damage.

So, I rolled up my sleeves (actually, I took off my t-shirt, because it was really hot that day), and now (and $60 later) my yard has new green babies in it -  about 6 dozen monkey-grass plants. Yey!

 

Сегодня я сделала первый шажочек в направлении воплощения моей мечты как-нибуть восстановить вид моего заднего дворика. Первым шажочком стало замедление эрозии почвы возле прудика. Вода с нашей крыши падает с большой высоты на землю, льется по трещинам в земле вниз, к забору, и смывает на своем пути все, что попадется под руку. Таким образом, за последние 4 года у нас образовалось целое русло, по которому можно легко проследить путь течения воды. И весь чернозем смылся. Итак, план А - это засыпать русло землей, выровнять уровень почвы, установить барьеры для воды, нанести нового почвенного покрытия, и засадить кучу небольших растений там, где вода, скорее всего, будет пытаться проникнуть.

Для моего плана я выбрала несколько небольших бревен, и где-то 60 кустиков "обезьянней травы", которая очень быстро растет и закрепляется в земле. Посмотрим, как они продержатся после первого дождя.

Pumpkin experiment ongoing

Well, today is September 26th, and it has been 10 days since I carved my first two experimental pumpkins.

Pumpkin #1, the one treated with Un-Petroleum Jelly, is holding up well (as far as the firmness of the walls and the overall look). I see no signs of decomposition. When I knock on the walls, they make a good loud sound, like the fresh pumpkins do. However, the outside rim started to change color to green a few days ago. I don't know what is going on inside the pumpkin, since there is parsley growing in it right now. By the way, I need to make a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin, for water drainage.

Pumpkin #2, the one treated with peanut oil, is looking very good on the outside, the wall's firmness is excellent, and there is cut edges remain nice and orange in color, but when I took the flower pot out, I found signs of ongoing deterioration on the inside walls.

So far, both of the pumpkins are still looking great on the outside. I will re-check on them again in 10 days, to see how they are holding up.


Мой эксперимент "Тыквенные горшочки"  продолжается. Я сделала пару горшков, и один из них намазан  изнутри Вазелином, а второй  -  арахисовым маслом. Я вычитала, что оба средства помогают тыкве "продержаться" долше после того, как из нее вынуты семена. Поскольку каждый горшок занимает где-то час, чтобы его высрести и вычистить, то я хотела бы, чтобы мои творения простояли как можно дольще. Ну так вот, спустя 10 дней после сотворения, они оба отлично выглядят снаружи - никаких признаков дряблости или порчи. Изнутри, однако, они начинают подавать признаки разложения. Горшок из под-моего "Гавроша" начал поддаваться  плесени. А горшок с травкой орегано стал "зеленеть"  по краям. Что ж, посмотрим еще через 10 дней, в каком они будут состоянии.

Making my own candle

I wanted a citronella candle to see if it will repel mosquitoes in my backyard, but they didn't have any at Whole Foods or Natural Grocers. So, I decided I can make my own (as opposed to ordering online and waiting for it to be shipped, etc).

YouTube instructions on making scented candles were very helpful. I bought a block of wax at Natural Grocers ($11), a slow cooker at Target ($12, the cheapest I could find) and a roll of wick ($14), as well as some wick centering devices at HobbyLobby ($5). For the candle jar, I just used an old glass jar from fruit preserves.

Chipping the wax away from the block was a bit of a chore. I used about 1/4 of the block for my first experiment.

Melting the wax in the slow cooker took about 1 hour.

I pre-mixed the oils of citronella, lemon eucalyptus, and clove to mix with the wax. I also pre-treated the wick, as the online instructions suggested.

The rest was pure fun, and the kitchen smelled awesome afterward.

 

Unfortunately, the candle cracked around the wick. I have seen some mentioning that the candles need to cool down slowly to avoid cracking, but none of the videos actually showed how to do that. I heated my glass container before hand, but I guess it was not enough. Next time I will try cooling them in a slightly warm oven, to see what happens. 

My first candle cracked, but I still love it, and it smells wonderful.

My next big idea is to try making candles with whole herbs or spices inside. For example, pieces of vanilla bean, whole cloves, or cinnamon bark inside the candle. Or twigs of peppermint, mint, thyme, or needles of rosemary or pine.


Креэйтив продолжает бить ключем. Меня посетило желание найти специальные свечи для отпугивания комаров - с маслом цитронелла. Но нигде такие не продаются, а заказывать с интернета - долго и дорого. Ну вот так и пришло мне в голову, что забацать свои собственные свечи будет не так трудно, и с учетом того, что масло цитронелла весьма дешевое, изготовление таких свеч в домашних условиях будет финансово выгодно.

Одна малаенькая трудность -  я никогда не делала собственных свечей.  Ну да такие мелочи никогда меня еще не остановливали. Итак, на интернете я нашла инструкции для отлива свечей, и на следующий день побежала делать необходимые покупки: пчелиный воск (11 баксов за фунт), крок-пот (медленно-варилка) за 12 баксов, моток фителя за 14 баксов, а так же фитель-центрующие устройства. И, не теряя времени и запала, решила сделать первый пробный выстрел.


Самым трудный оказалось расковыривание куска воска (мне нужна была где-то одна четверть). Растапливание заняло около часа.  После этого я смешала растопленный воск с маслами цитронелла, экалиптуса, и гвоздики (специи), и вылила все в разогретую пустую баночку из-под джема. Вуаля!

Свечка получилась отменно пахнущая, только вот образовалась трещина возле фитиля. В инструкциях было написано, что остужать надо медленно, чтоб свечка не потрескалась. В следующий раз буду остужать  бакочку с воском в теплой духовке.

Bigger pumpkins coming into play

I watched the video on making pumpkin flower pots by Shiho Masuda (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBXi3E-fjDY), and I want a pumpkin flower-holder (or a couple!) of my own. So, here was my go at this with a pot of freshly bought Firepower Nandina:

Except that I thought the shrub was a bit too small for this large pumpkin, so I went out and bought a couple of more creative-looking plants, although I am not 100% sure what kind of plants they were.

The pumpkin was cut on Friday, the 17th, and it was treated with peanut oil. We will see how long it will last in comparison to the other two!




Меня околдовали тыквы, что у нас осенью продаются по всем углам. Я купила аж 5 штук, разных размеров, и сейчас меня грызет креэйтив. Решила ими украсить все углы дома. Из пары решила сделать себе улыбающиеся горшки для цветов. Прямо Мама Карло! Вот одно из моих "тыквенных детищ." Его зовут Гаврош. Изначально цветок задумывался зеленым, но зеленый цветок (ктороый вообще-то не цветок, а растущий кустик) оказался маловат для тыквы, и я заменила его этим красным воплощением Медузы Горгоны. Я не знаю, как зовут этот красный цветок (который, я подозреваю, может быть тоже каким-то кустовым растением). Любуйтесь!

My pumpkin dreams, starting to take shape

I bought some pumpkins of different sizes to try to carve them into flower pots.

My very first flower pot didn't turn out great, because I picked smaller pumpkin than I needed, so the poor parsley plant was all crammed and would need to be re-planted sometime down the line. The pumpkin was not treated with anything to preserve it, so we will see how long it will last.

 

 The second pumpkin was just the size I needed. I coated insides and the edges with Un-Petroleum Jelly (by Alby Organics), so we will see how long this one will last.

I love how both of them look, even though the first one is not perfect.

Both were carved and planed on Thursday, the 16th. 

Pumpkin flower pots

I saw a plastic pumpkin with artificial flowers in it at Hobby Lobby today, and it looked gorgeous. Now I am obsessed with this idea to try using a real pumpkin as a flower pot for my cooking herbs, and see how long it will hold its shape. I bought 3 big pumpkins at Whole Foods and 7 different baby herbs at HomeDepot this afternoon, and I can't wait to put my hands on them tomorrow morning.

P.S. To keep the pumpkins from shriveling,  some sites suggest covering them with Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, or lacquer, or vegetable oil,

Hmmm... Smells like... tea tree oil and citronella!

Well, our yard has overcame the urine smell allright... I put my plan "Aroma Fence" in motion this morning, when I painted certain items (mostly buckets and up-side-down trash cans) in the yard with essential oil and placed them in several strategically chosen places in the yard.

I use 7 different strong essential oils (one per bucket), to test which one would keep the dogs away the longest: eucalyptus, citronella (boy, that one stinks!), tea tree, rosemary, lemon, clove, and peppermint. Now the yard... hmmm... well, smells.... we will see how the experiment goes!

Hmmm. smells like... dog pee...

My husband and I have 3 dogs, and two of them are males. They are the reason I do not have flower beds, or pots with cooking herbs... They pee on everything that stands out from the landscape. After 3 years of sadly watching my yard wither away and smell up, I am ready to take charge of the situation. I am hoping that I can teach them to use only a part of the yard for their toilet activities. Easier said than done, of course. My husband suggested "invisible fence," but I am totally against any electric shocks to my puppies.

I decided to turn my aromatherapy interests into a yard-therapy. I will find a way to make my yard smell good (or better), damnit! So, here we are. After spending last evening scouring the Internet, I came up with a list of essential oils and other home remedies supposedly effective in keeping the dogs away from certain spots.

Different web sites provide different suggestions. Given the dare situation in my yard, I decided to see which suggestion would be the most effective, rather than waste my money (and time) on ineffective essential oils or other ineffective products. More on that in the next post.

My dream starts here...

My husband and I own a townhouse with a small back yard, with a goldfish pond inside the yard. We also own 3 large dogs. For all the 4 years since we owned it, we rarely had time to look after the yard. The dogs peed, dug, and clawed whatever they felt like. Despair about the state of our yard settled in maybe 3 years ago.

Well, until a few days ago. A few days ago, I decided to change the world... well, at least the small part of it. And I decided to jump into gardening. So, here we go.... With so many beautiful and challenging things to come, I decided to start a blog to share my experiences and find new friends...
